Why Me’ appears in court for mention

Francis Kapwepwe, popularly known as ‘Why Me’, appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court yesterday for mention in a case where he faces three counts of hate speech. He is accused of expressing or showing hatred, ridicule, or contempt against individuals on the basis of race, tribe, colour, and place of origin.

On September 24, 2025, his defence team filed a fresh application questioning the jurisdiction of the Zambian court to hear the matter, citing allegations that the accused was arrested in Zimbabwe.

The case was initially presided over by Magistrate Peter Mungala, who later recused himself. Magistrate Idah Mupemo has since set October 9, 2025, as the date for ruling on the jurisdiction issue. When the matter came up today, Magistrate Fine Mayambu directed that the accused should reappear for mention on the same date.

Meanwhile, in Kasenengwa District, District Commissioner Rachael Phiri has urged youths to resist being used as instruments of violence ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Addressing a youth town hall meeting in Chingazi Ward, Ms. Phiri warned that young people are often targeted with money or gifts to instigate violence during elections, a practice that undermines peace and development.

“As youths, let us not allow ourselves to be exploited for selfish political interests as the country prepares for next year’s elections,” she advised.

She further encouraged young people to support the government under President Hakainde Hichilema, noting that the administration has prioritised youth empowerment. She cited initiatives such as skills development programmes and bursaries, which are designed to improve the livelihoods of young people in the district and across the country.
